Pie charts are used often to represent things and portions of a whole. In dotnet Report Builder, users can take any variable and create a pie chart from it as long as it is related to a numeric value that can be quantified. Many key performance indicators can be tracked via a pie chart. To create a pie chart, click on the “Pie” button in the “Choose Report Type” section. The next step is to select the fields that will be in the report.
The fields that will populate the report can be found in the “Choose Data for Report” section. Click on the “Choose Section…” drop down to reveal the list of available tables in your database.
As with the other report types, the fields selected for the report will be summarized in the “Selected data for the Report” section as shown below. For pie charts, only the first two fields will be used to create the chart. The rest of the fields are then used to create a summary report under the pie chart. In the example shown below, the first two rows in the “Select Data for the Report” section at Product and Unit Price. The resulting pie chart displays the weighted average price of each product sold.
If, on the other hand, the first two rows in the “Selected Data for the Report” section are products and quantity sold, then the resulting pie chart shows the fractional contribution of each products sold on overall sales.
